The Ultimate Bucket List For Exploring Raja Ampat

In a recent blog post written by Annette for Bucket List Journey you can discover a noteworthy way to experience Indonesia. She explains that often you think of white-sand beaches and turquoise waters when you think of this country but there is much more to it that many people fail to realize. Bali is a popular destination in Indonesia that often brings in a lot of tourists. Instead of exploring this city venture to Raja Ampat. Annette claims that it will even give Bali a run for its money!

One characteristic of Raja Ampat that sets it apart from other locations is that it's remote. As we've discussed in other blog posts at WanderersOnly we advise travelers to go to destinations that don't have as large of crowds. Being an island that's essentially been untouched by tourism makes it an ideal spot if you're looking to escape touristy attractions and lots of people. Raja Ampat also has some of the best sea life. Annette writes that some creatures can be seen even at the jetties not far from shore. You can go snorkeling or scuba diving if you're interested in seeing some colorful fish.

Another activity you can do is walk on a floating sand island. When I first started reading about this I couldn't believe it was real but despite my doubts it is! Annette describes Pasir Timbul as an island in the middle of the ocean that can only be seen during certain parts of the day (during low tide). If you time it perfectly you can walk along the sand at Pasir Timbul while being surrounded by water. A few other activities mentioned include:

  • Feeding the fish at Sawinggrai

  • Meeting locals (we highly recommend this too)

  • Hike Piaynemo

  • Watch the sunset/sunrise

Lastly, Annette says one of the most important things to do while exploring Raja Ampat is disconnect. Forget about Facebook, Instagram and texting your friends back home. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and create a meaningful travel experience in Indonesia by putting down the phone. Take in every moment there while you can.
