Experience New Jersey Beaches Like A Local

As a New Jersey native and an avid beach goer, I am very familiar with many local NJ beaches and spots. New Jersey has some of the most beautiful beaches, but it gets little credit for it. Many of the beaches in NJ are very local which are perfect for those traveling and wanting to have a local feel. Despite the unfortunate associations that the reality show, Jersey Shore, has had on the perception of NJ beaches, that is one very small segment that is definitely not where you want to go if you are visiting NJ hoping for a local beach experience. If you are planning a trip to the shore and want to rent a house or stay at a hotel, don’t wait until last minute. The prices get high and places get full very fast! Some of my favorite beach spots in New Jersey, to name a few, are Long Beach Island, Belmar, Seabright and Point Pleasant.

Long Beach Island, more commonly known as LBI, is one of the best beach towns to spend a week or two in over the summer. Its mostly house rentals, but there are a few hotels on the beach. I used to go there every summer when I was younger, and it still remains one of my favorite spots. You are guaranteed to see at least 100 cruiser bikes along the island every day because that is the favorite means of transportation. The houses range from small shacks to giant estates. Many people start looking for rentals during the colder off seasons so that they have more options for the summer time. LBI is relaxing area with not much wild night life because it is a very family oriented island. The days consist of relaxing on the beach and grilling dinner at night while enjoying the view from the deck.

Belmar is the beach I spend most of my days at during the summer. It lines up with Avon and Bradley Beach as well which are two other awesome beaches, but Belmar has my heart. It is usually mostly locals during the week and then on the weekends it can get pretty crowded with people on vacation. The boardwalk is a perfect spot for a morning run or walk. Sometimes I go early in the morning for a long run and then jump right in the ocean - that is the best way to start the day. Delicious pizza places, smoothie bars and ice cream stops are all across from the boardwalk. The beach itself is very deep and the water always remains clean and clear. This town is populated by mostly locals, but it is possible to find some house rentals. Otherwise there a a couple of hotels that are not too pricey. This is the beach for you if you want a totally local beach experience.

Another local favorite is Seabright. In Seabright there is a free beach that the local goers all call “Tradewinds” because the free access is on Tradewinds Circle. Seabright has many beach clubs that all prohibit public access. Personally, I do not think the beach clubs are worth the cost because one block down is the same beach and it is free. Tommy’s is a relatively new restaurant across from the beach and it is always busy because of how delicious the food is. It has brick oven pizza, sushi and a whole menu of dinners. Not to mention the extensive beer menu for those who love craft and locally brewed beers. It is always a good time at Tommy’s, but they don’t take reservations so if you are planning on going get there a little early.

Point Pleasant is a travel destination for many families. The boardwalk is the best part of this spot. There are rides for kids at one end and as you walk down there is candy shops, ice cream, pizzerias and restaurants to eat at. The night life is fun for adults because there are many beach bars that locals and people visiting enjoy. There is also an aquarium to visit that is reasonably priced and always a fun time. People can rent houses or stay at hotels in Point Pleasant.

The list of beaches is NJ is endless and vary in pricing and popularity, but one thing is for sure - whatever beach you choose to visit, you won't be disappointed.
